A Great Introduction to a Complex Community!

Corbin's Bend - what a wonderful idea! A co-operative housing community for spankers. An awesome fictional world. Wish it were real! The truly gifted authors in this Season One Collection do a great job of bringing the community to life. Thannia D, Tara Finnegan, Cara Bristol and Kathryn R. Blake create a varied collection of stories about four different couples at different stages in their relationship all with their own take on and experience of domestic discipline. In addition to the couples, the authors people the stories with the different inhabitants and goings on of the community. This variety contributes to the feeling of a vibrant community with complex characters living real lives.
In Finding Their Bliss, Thannia D introduces us to Brent Carmichael, one of the founders of Corbin’s Bend and his strong, yet calm brand of leadership both as leader of the Corbin’s Bend Housing Committee and as Head of his own Household. Interestingly he finds his love with, Charmagne, a woman from outside the community and new to the entire concept of DD. Yet her house is on the land of the housing estate, but not part of it, or subject to its rules – nice symbolism, Thannia.
Tara Finnegan crafts an Irish immigrant couple’s journey to freedom from prejudice in Angie and Jim’s story. Whereas their forefathers found religious and political freedom, in Exile to Unity this modern couple travel to Colorado to escape persecution over their sexual choices. Happily, Corbin’s Bend proves a place of refuge that brings them the same freedoms the New World brought immigrants in past centuries, but not without its own brand of strife first.
I have to admit that the sweet eroticism of Cara Bristol’s, Long Shot is my personal favorite in this collection. I love my spanking stories hot and tender with strong characters who still have a sense of humor and Cara delivers beautifully here. Just loved it when Harris informs Abby as she naughtily teases him in the Italian restaurant that nobody would blink an eye if he spanked her there and then! Oh why, oh why are there no eateries like that around my neck of the woods!
Those who like their subject matter a little heavier will be drawn into the exploration of the line between domestic abuse and domestic discipline, Kathryn R. Blake tackles in A Simple Misunderstanding. Not for the fainthearted, but an important topic sensitively handled. In fact all the stories in some way explore this fraught topic to some extent as each heroine has to be rescued from some form of abuse visited on them either by another man or as in Angie’s case unfair penalties both by the institutions in Ireland and unfortunately Corbin Bend’s discipline committee.
This failure in the community may seem a flaw and offend some, but for me it simply adds to the reality of the world building of the emerging Corbin’s Bend. It’s a great place - not a perfect one. Hey, maybe it’s real after all!
